Who We Are
Eric Hampton graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy and the Juilliard
School where he studied with Antony Tudor, Jose Limon, the Graham
teachers, and Anna Sokolow. In 1969 he traveled to Europe to join the
prestigious Netherlands Dance Theater and the Scapino Ballet. Upon
returning to the United States in 1978, Mr. Hampton joined the Washington
Ballet as a soloist and resident choreographer. He also directed his own
studio, Dance Downtown, until 1986. A faculty member of the Maryland
Youth Ballet since 1981, Mr. Hampton taught and was Resident
Choreographer for its’ professionally focused children. A highly
respected teacher, Hampton conducted master classes throughout the United
States and Europe. His choreography has been taken into the repertoires
of the Juilliard School and many locally based professional troupes,
including Bowen McCauley Dance, CityDance Ensemble, Karen & Alvin,
Rincones & Company Dance Theater and The Washington Ballet. In October of
1997, Hampton won the Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence in an Artistic
Discipline and the Pola Nirenska Award, an award given for outstanding
contributions to dance in Washington. In February 2000 he received the
Gene Frey Award for Fund Raising from the Whitman Walker Clinic. Mr.
Hampton was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease in 1997. He passed away
in February 2001.
Eric Hampton Dance was founded in 1991 to bring Eric Hampton’s brand of classically inspired contemporary movement to audiences throughout the Washington area. Attracting dancers of distinguished artistry to the company, Eric Hampton Dance was one of DC’s most distinctive dance companies. The work and the company consistently earned critical praise locally and nationally. The company’s premier performance in 1991 was a benefit for the Whitman-Walker Clinic. At annual benefits over the years since then, a total of over $46,500 was raised to support Whitman-Walker programs. Mr Hampton and Eric Hampton Dance received support from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation, and the Maryland Youth Ballet.
Elisa Clark (Director of Repertory) is from the Washington, DC area, and received her early training from Eric Hampton and the Maryland Youth Ballet before earning her BFA from the Juilliard School, under the direction of Benjamin Harkarvy. She has had the honor of being a member of the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, the Mark Morris Dance Group, and Robert Battle’s Battleworks Dance Company, where she also served as Company Manager and Rehearsal Assistant to Mr. Battle. Additionally, she has staged the works of Mr. Lubovitch, Mr. Morris and Mr. Battle, as well as Rehearsal Directed the work of David Parsons, Carolyn Adams, Adam Hougland and Igal Perry. A teacher in her own right, she has been on faculty at the American Dance Festival, Perry-Mansfield and the New Jersey Dance Theater Ensemble, and been Guest Faculty at dozens of Colleges and Universities throughout the nation. She has performed with the Metropolitan Opera Ballet in new productions choreographed by Mr. Morris, Ben Wright, and Crystal Pite, and also appeared with the Nederlands Dans Theater as part of the Lincoln Center Festival. A current member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ms. Clark is also a Princess Grace Winner.
